Play European Blackjack With Side Bets

Posted on October 21, 2011 by

A blackjack game that´s also quite popular among blackjack players is European Blackjack. This famous game often comes with an optional side game that offers you additional payouts for up to 10:1 the amount of original stake.

Each variation of European blackjack has its own rules and offers different payouts depending on the type of side bet offered, however, in this article we´re going to focus on the European Hi-Lo and High Streak versions.

The Rules of European Blackjack

32Red Casino offers a European blackjack variation that uses only 2 decks of cards. This is attractive because using 2 decks offers the player a house edge of just 0.46%.

European blackjack is most commonly played using 6 decks of cards but as with any other blackjack game the number of decks used can vary, which in turn increases/decreases the house´s advantage, so check before playing.

An important rule variation of this game is that Splitting is permitted only when the player has a pair of 10´s, nevertheless Hitting and Doubling is allowed after splitting hands.

Players may buy Insurance against a possible dealer´s blackjack which will return the original stake at 2:1.

Doubling-Down is only allowed if the first two cards dealt to you add up to 9,10 or 11 in point value.

Any winning bet apart from natural blackjacks, which pays at 3:2,  return bets at 1:1 – double your money.

How to Win the High Streak Bet

The High Streak side bet in European Blackjack allows players to place an additional stake that can payout as much as 10:1 if they win two or more consecutive hands.

The side game begins with players placing a wager on the High Streak and it´s “activated” once the player wins the first hand. The payout for this side bet is increased every time the player wins the following hand.

Once the player has won 2 consecutive hands, the bet is returned at 1:1.

If there´s a third consecutive win, the payout increases to 2:1 of the original stake.

Winning a fourth consecutive hand will now pay the bet at 5:1 and if player´s can achieve five winning hands in a row the bet will return at a staggering 10:1!

Hi-Lo 13 Bets Payouts

If the odds of Blackjack High Streak don´t tickle your fancy, Blackjack Hi-Lo is another game that offers great chances of winning with attractive payouts.

In Blackjack Hi-Lo 13 players are simply placing bets on what they think the total value of their first two cards will be, either Below, Equal or Above 13 in point value.

A successful bet on either Below or Above 13 will pay your bet at 1:1 – double your money, but a successful bet on Equal to 13 will yield an impressive return of 10:1.

Now let´s look at the probabilities of these three bets. The chances of you drawing a hand that totals 11 in value are just 4.73% and they´re even smaller for any number below 11.

The odds of drawing 12 (below) and 13 (the middle point) are actually identical, 9.47% and the most likely to be drawn is getting a combined value of 20 which has a probability of 10.65%.
